Survived a Bullet

By Claire Monreal
Poetry

War is darkness
killed by darkness—bombings,
guns being sold to enemies,
airstrikes caused by the military.
Violence is a dark sky
that creates memories
of nightmare.

Hope is holding on
to a rope of truth.
Peace is as simple
as flowers—a bullet
can be a poinsettia, a casket
a daylily.
